Letters to my Children

Nolan experiencing snow for the first time | Children Photography | Cincinnati Family Photographer

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.” ― Lewis Carroll

Dear Nolan,

I know, I know … we gave you a beautiful and warm middle name: Rio.

But what can we do? Your dad works in Cincinnati, and this is what happens in December: it snows!

So we took you outside. We dressed you very warm, and we were excited to see your reaction. You love going outside, so we were very excited to see you experience and play with the snow.

But, you didn’t move much. You kinda got paralyzed. You looked at us with your wise baby face, and if I could read your mind, I think you would be saying: “Come on, snow is really just fancy little bits of ice, so why are we outside when it’s so cold, mommy?”

I’m going to blame your dad for that. He is the one who lived in Canada for so long and likes winter. Yesterday was probably the day you gave me your blessing to be inside the home during winters. And I know that you, being half Brazilian and with this sunny middle name, will understand why I won’t be playing outside in the snow for more than 5 minutes.

You were so adorable yesterday. While you didn’t move much, for few seconds you did tried to jump and run, but got afraid to fall and when your gloves fell off, oh, boy, you gave up.

And for the first time since you started to walk, your dad and I saw your running inside the house, without complaining that your outside play time was over.

with Love,

Mommy
